The research priorities of these disciplines are specified according to the needs and requirements of national development plans and national policy for science and technology in Saudi Arabia.  The research areas of the laboratory consist the following disciplines:

Remote sensing

Biomedical signal and image processing

Remote sensing (RS) can be defined as the process of acquiring information about the earth ‎surface without being in physical contact with it as shown in the Figure below. The remote nature ‎of the adopted technologies allow us to make observations, take measurements, and produce ‎images of phenomena that are beyond the limits of our own senses and capabilities. For ‎such purposes, airborne as well as spaceborne sensors are used to provide repeatable and ‎continuous observations of processes needed to understand the earth system. ‎

In modern healthcare, biomedical signal and image play an important role throughout the ‎entire clinical process from diagnostics and treatment planning to surgical procedures and ‎follow up studies. They are often designate to the set of signals (e.g. electrocardiogram, ‎electroneurogram, electromyogram, phonocardiogram, speech signal, etc.) and images ‎‎(e.g. computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasound, endoscopy, etc.) ‎that are acquired to capture internal aspect of the body. With the increasing amount of ‎patient data, new challenges and opportunities arise for different phases of the clinical ‎routine, such as diagnosis, surgery and therapy. The enormous socio-economic importance ‎of research and innovation in this field to the kingdom is of high importance‎.

Computer vision


Computer Vision is a science that develops models and methods for understanding, analyzing, acquiring and processing images and generally high-dimensional structured data. Computer Vision is an inter-disciplinary field with strong links to Machine Learning, Optimization, Biology, Computer Graphics, and Human Computer Interaction. 

Biometrics are our most unique physical (and behavioral) features that can be practically sensed by devices and interpreted by computers so that they may be used as proxies of our physical selves in the digital realm. In this way we can bond digital data to our identity with permanency, consistency, and unambiguity, and retrieve that data using computers in a rapid and automated fashion



Robots can be instructed to execute a variety of motions in an endless combination of sequences, thus making them for more versatile than a single-purpose machine. Autonomous robotic systems represent the next great step in the junction of mechanical systems, actuators, sensing, electronics and software to create intelligent systems capable of interacting with the complexities of the real world. Autonomous systems are the physical embodiment of machine intelligence.
